What Did the Kids Experience?

A 20-minute Summer 2026 debrief before you start planning 2027.

Created for summer leaders participating in NSLA's Summer Starts in September: Reflection, Impact, and Innovation, this one-page Camp Jamison Way tool helps you look beyond attendance, outcomes, and program data and ask a different question: What did summer actually feel like to the young people in your program?

Start with three young people from Summer 2026, ask them directly about their experience, and turn what you learn into four decisions for 2027: Keep. Stop. Change. Try.

Add an On-the-Ground Perspective

Add a Camp Jamison Practitioner

For team trainings and larger engagements, organizations can add a Camp Jamison staff member or alumni leader to bring an additional practitioner perspective to the conversation—connecting The Camp Jamison Way to what it actually looks and feels like in practice with young people.

Our practitioners are Camp Jamison staff and former campers who are now leaders. They show your team what belonging looks like from the young person's side.

Available with Team Training and Summer Program Partnerships

Team Training add-on: +$500

For larger partnerships, practitioner involvement can be built into the customized scope.

The Framework

The Camp Jamison Way

The Camp Jamison Way is built around six elements we intentionally design into the young-person experience: developmental relationships, belonging, restorative practices, youth voice, joy, and nature. Together, they help create environments where young people feel known, connected, supported, and free to experience childhood.

Developmental Relationships

Consistent, caring relationships with staff who know young people and show up for them.

Belonging

Environments where every young person is known, included, and valued as part of the community.

Restorative Practices

Responding to behavior in ways that repair relationships and build community rather than punish.

Youth Voice

Centering young people's ideas, choices, and leadership in the life of the program.

Joy

Intentionally making room for play, delight, and the freedom to experience childhood.

Nature

Time outdoors and shared experiences that restore, ground, and connect young people.

The Camp Jamison Way in Practice

In 2026, Camp Jamison partnered with the School District of Philadelphia to provide a healing-centered summer camp—a residential summer experience for 70 high school students from across the city—putting these practices to work while building belonging among young people arriving from different schools and communities.
