Introduction

Welcome to taking steps towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable summer camp industry. This document is an introductory guide to understanding and implementing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles within the summer camp industry.

The Need for DEI Initiatives

The underrepresentation of BIPOC youth in overnight camps underscores the critical need for comprehensive DEI initiatives. True inclusivity involves creating environments that welcome all children and actively engaging systematically underrepresented communities to ensure their representation and participation in camping activities.

Starting Points for DEI Efforts

  • Acknowledge the problem: BIPOC children are not getting the benefits of overnight summer camp that white children are receiving every summer.
  • Community Engagement and Outreach: Develop targeted programs to connect with systematically underrepresented communities, fostering trust and awareness.
  • Cultural Competency Training/Consulting: Invest in DEI training for your staff to promote an understanding and inclusive camp culture.
